From Hyde in War Time, 1916 , page 127:

On or about the 20th September [1915] Drummer Roach's wife received a piece of khaki cloth containing a message, written in copying ink, from her husband, in which he said he had just come out of the fire trench, and had cut the cloth from his trousers, as he could not get any writing paper. The piece of cloth was found on the quayside by a soldier [who posted it to Amy Roach].
