A letter to Mrs Ward:
It is with great regret that I have to tell you that Willie was killed. I was with him all along, and just as we had got our objective we got down in a shell hole to consolidate. Willie had just got down and only his face was showing above the ground, but the snipers were very busy and Willie died without as much as a murmur. I should have written before as we were such close pals for a time, only I have not your address.
Sharing your sad bereavement,
I remain.
Pte. F. Rowbotham.
