At 8:45pm on 22/09/1916 Private Middleton died of Septicaemia and haemorrhage, 27 days after amputation of left leg took place because of a gun shot wound to the left thigh.

All gravestones have been removed from St George’s churchyard.   The CWGC gravestones were replaced by the memorial pictured above.

The original gravestone had the following message, put there Mr M H Middleton of 5 Bramall St, Flowery Field, Hyde:
