He was killed while in the trenches in France, along with four comrades he was sitting in a dug out, when an enemy shell happened to drop close to them, killing all five instantaneously.
From the North Cheshire Herald, 25th September 1915, page 8, column 3:
His last letter home, dated September 12th [1915], he wrote
Dear Mother,
Just a few lines in answer to your welcome letter, which I received a few days ago. I am glad to tell you I expect my furlough in a couple of days, but I don’t know what day it will be, so you can expect me. When I get to London I will send you a wire. I hope you are all in the best of health, as this leaves me.
