From the Hyde Reporter, 13th November 1915, page 7, column 4:

His last letter to his sister Mrs Gibbons, 6 Shenton Street, Flowery Field, Hyde, Cheshire, dated August 17th 1915:
I expect you have heard of the British success. I am very glad to say that I came through without a scratch. We had an awful time. We were under shell fire for seventeen hours. The General told us it was a most infernal bombardment. You never knew what would happen the next minute. It was like waiting for death. There were some awful sights. I am very proud to say the boys stuck it well. I feel very sorry for my comrades who fell, but I thank God that He spared me.

The message on his CWGC gravestone, put there by his father:

HE PLAYED THE MAN
