From the National Roll of the Great War 1914 – 1918:
Wheway, C. P., Private, South Lancashire Regt.. He joined in February 1916, and after a period of training, was sent to the Western Front in the following September. After only eight days’ active service, he died gloriously on the field of Battle on the Somme on October 1st 1916. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals. “He died the noblest death a man may die, fighting for God and right and liberty”.
