Elijah Smith’s funeral was held in Hyde town centre, with a funeral cortege along Market Street on route to St. George’s Church. Before his burial he was given a military salute over his grave.
All gravestones have now been removed from St George’s churchyard. The CWGC gravestones were replaced by the memorial pictured right.
