Enlisted with the Manchester Regiment as a Second Lieutenant in November 1914, and promoted to Captain in January 1915.
From the Denstonian School Magazine:
Captain Sayce was killed in action. In the attack on July 1st he asked his Commanding Officer to allow him to lead and led his men splendidly to the capture of the enemy’s front line trench. They achieved this much with speed and completeness and equally quick won their way to the second trench. Captain Sayce was about to jump into this with his men when he was hit by a sniper’s bullet. He was 29 years of age.
