Enlisted in 1915 aged 62, but in Short Service Papers his age is written as 55 years and 5 months. William had previously served through the South African War in the Royal Horse Artillery and was awarded Medal, Clasp and Pension. He served for a short time during the war, and was discharged from military service on March 14th 1918.

He formed the training corps at Ashton’s Mill while under their employment. Many of the men he trained were sent into military service.
