A letter to his parents Christmas 1914:
Just a few line to let you know I have received your very welcome letter and parcel. I am very pleased with the way you have made me up a Christmas parcel, and I can assure you that the contents will not be needlessly wasted. I thank everyone that has contributed to it. Tell our Louis that I cannot send him a packet of French tabs now as it takes us all our time to get English ones. Let all know that I am doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances. I might as well tell you that we have been in the firing line, and we have only two casualties. The last time we were relieved we had a very hot five minutes coming out. I thought we should have been wiped out, but no one was hit. Our feet catch it worst in this job. Give Mr Wildgoose my best respects.
P.S. I am expecting to have a merry Christmas.
