Lance Corporal James McDonald age 35 of the Dragoon Guards, resided at Hall Street, Middleton, and had served 16 years in the army. Being in the reserve, he was called up on the 4th August, going to the front in November.

He was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the king of the Belgians for distinguished service.

Lance Corporal James’s Captain wrote to his Wife stating:

It is my painful duty to write to tell you that your husband was killed instantaneously by shell fire we were going into action. I deeply sympathise with your loss. He was a very gallant soldier and always displayed great coolness and courage in the face of the enemy, and was a fine example to all ranks.
