James enlisted twice.   The first time was on 15th October 1914 as Private 17476 in the Cheshire Regiment, but sixteen days later he was discharged unfit for service.

On British Army Pension Record age is given as 19 years and 14 day old, when his actual age was 23.

In the 1911 Census his name is given as William Bardsley.
