He was drowned when the destroyer HMS Narborough and her sister ship HMS Opal ran aground and were wrecked at the foot of the cliffs at Hesta Rock, just north of Windwick Bay, South Ronaldsay, in the Orkney Islands, during a violent gale and snowstorm. Only one sailor survived the wreck, 188 were killed, most were never found.
