On March 29th [1917, Rev. William Herbert] Stables officiated at the St. Chad’s funeral of Private Fred Astles who had died in a military hospital at Oswestry, aged only nineteen and without having served abroad at all. The Vicar warned his flock that “in consequence of labour difficulties, it is now necessary to give notice of any funeral immediately, otherwise we can in no way promise that the grave will be dug by the desired date.”
